    Larry Lloyd Hanshaw was born on August 8, 1935. He married Pam on June 19, 1979. Together they had five children Scott , Greg , Deanne , Dana , and Andrew. Larry and Pam have six grandchildren. Scott and his wife Anne have three children Drew , Matthew , and Zachary. Greg and his wife Julie have two children Benjamin and Natalie. Deanne has one son, Bryce.

    Larry joined the 34th Army Band as a drummer and drum major in the Iowa Army National Guard on July 14, 1952. He was the Circulation Manager for the Fairfield Daily Ledger Newspaper in Fairfield, Iowa between 1962 and 1972. Larry was Administrative Supply Technician for 34th Army Band of Iowa Army National Guard during 1972 to 1978.

    In 1978, Larry became the Recruiting Area Supervisor for Recruiting Command of the State HQ's Iowa Army National Guard in Johnston, Iowa. In 1981, he became the Recruiting Operations Sergeant Major for the Recruiting Command of State HQ's Iowa Army National Guard.

    On February 2nd, 1981, Larry was promoted to Sergeant Major. In 1985, Larry became the Retention Operations Sergeant Major for the State HQ's Iowa Army National Guard

    In August of 1995, Larry retired as Military Personnel Sergeant Major of the Iowa Army National Guard.

    Larry has been decorated with the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (3rd Award), the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (4th Award), the Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Iowa Leadership Ribbon w/Torch, the Iowa State Service Ribbon (8th Award), and the Expert Rifle Qualification Badge

    Larry Joined the Fraternal Order of Eagles on March 2, 1957 to Fairfield Aerie #1927, Fairfield, Iowa.

    "Both of my parents were longtime members of the Fairfield Eagles and there wasn't any question as to my siblings and myself joining."

    Larry was Past Worthy President of Fairfield in 1962-1963. He transferred his membership to Des Moines #109 in 1979.

    Larry was at one time the District Director for what is now called the Southeast Lakes District. He has also held the position of Eastern Zone Chairman.

    Larry served as Iowa State President in 1973-1974 along with MSP, Donna Verploegh. "I was the youngest Iowa State President elected in history of Iowa FOE and have held the largest membership year to date since WWII. I was also presented as a Bell Ringer during my year." Larry and Donna's State Project was the Marshalltown Tenco Shop which was a program to hire and employ handicapped adults.

    "I was West Central Regional President 1976-1977 and again a Bell Ringer. To date I have been the only Iowa State President to have been awarded the Bell Ringer Award for both years while serving as the Iowa State President and as the West Central Regional President."

    In 1998, Larry was inducted into the Iowa Ritual Hall of Fame. Then in 1999, he was inducted into the Iowa Hall of Fame.

    In 1984, Larry was appointed as Grand Aerie Ritual Advisor, a position which he held until 1993.

    In 1992, He was elected as Grand Worthy Outside Guard. Then in 1993, he was appointed as Grand Worthy Chaplain, as a result of a death of a Grand Aerie Trustee. Between the years of 1993 and 1997, Larry held the office of Grand Worthy Trustee. In 1997, He was elected as Grand Worthy Vice President, and in 1998 Grand Worthy President Elect.

    In the year 1999 to 2000, our own Larry Hanshaw served as Grand Worthy President. During the year as Grand Worthy President, his main charity was The Prevention of Child Abuse in which the Fraternal Order of Eagles raised over $1.1 million dollars.

    In his spare time, Larry enjoys coin collecting and reading mystery and spy novels. He is also a member of the American Legion. And you might even catch him in the Des Moines Aerie, rooting on his favorite baseball team, The St. Louis Cardinals.
